Downing's Malthouse No.1 & 2

This project reimagines Downing’s Malthouses in Gloucester as a cultural and community hub, transforming a derelict
industrial site into a space that celebrates heritage and creativity.

Developed through my academic work at the University of Sheffield and professional experience at Whittam Cox Architects, the proposal replaces a profit-led residential scheme with artist studios, exhibition space, and a central glazed atrium.

By retaining and expressing the listed structures, the design highlights the site’s historic character while introducing new uses. Public green space, sustainable features and flexible studio pods further support community engagement and long-term resilience.

Inspired by precedents like East Street Arts and Dovecote Studio, this scheme demonstrates how adaptive reuse can enrich local identity and foster inclusive cultural development.
