Greengate Commons: Supermarket to Social Market
Greengate Commons reimagines an ASDA Express scheme produced in Studio 1, based in the disused railway arches at Greengate, Salford. The project began with a question: what happens when we shift the idea of ‘provision’ from supplying goods to providing for people?

Rather than a purely commercial fit-out, this alternative proposal looks to create a socially driven, community-focused space. It includes a café, community kitchen, charity workspaces, flexible event and retail areas, and public green
space, which are all shaped around the existing arches and a newly proposed ‘high street’.
The aim was to retain the identity of the site while offering something that adds value in a different way. By responding to local need, homelessness, and the lack of accessible public space, this project aims to make space for people and not just products, giving the arches new life as a place to meet, gather and spend quality time.
