Intervening in the Country Cuckoo Lodge Farm

In 2020, during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, a Ketton based farmer uncovered remnants of Roman pottery in his field. After notifying English Heritage, an archaeological dig was organized and conducted by Leicester University.

This excavation revealed the extensive remains of a large rural Roman villa, along with associated buildings, spanning a total of 5 hectares.

At the heart of the discovery was an impressive Roman mosaic, illustrating a scene from the Trojan Wars. The final excavations at the site were completed in 2022.

The project takes a pragmatic approach by creating a design for a traditional visitors’ centre in its most essential form, incorporating all the necessary services one would expect from a visitor’s centre. The site is located in a highly rural area, presenting challenging constraints and unique opportunities for the project.
